Mpg Ratings
Every driver needs to understand MPG ratings. MPG stands for miles per gallon, and is an EPA given rating that tells you how many miles to the gallon you can expect for a certain vehicle. When shopping for a vehicle the higher the MPG, the better. You will notice that the numbers will be different for city and highway. Let's take a look at one of the highest MPG cars available today, the Toyota Prius. On average you'll get an MPG of around 45, which is pretty darn good. The EPA rating for the Prius is 60 MPG for the city and 51 for the highway, although most drivers report an average MPG of around 45.
When you consider gas guzzling cars that get 20 or less miles per gallon you will see just how efficient cars such as the Prius are. The Prius is a hybrid, and it definitely looks like one. Some people want to show off how eco-conscious they are and enjoy such a vehicle. Even celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz and Will Ferrell own and drive the Toyota Prius. Of course maybe you don't want to drive down the road and advertise that you've got a hybrid. That's OK, because there are tons of other hybrids that get great MPG and look just like a non-hybrid car.
Some of the manufacturers offering hybrid cars that look great include Lexus, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Honda and many others. You can get hybrid cars, hybrid trucks and hybrid sport utility vehicles. While the MPG for each will vary depending on make and model, you will find a substantial difference between the MPG for hybrid cars and non-hybrid cars. Even if you have a non-hybrid car and want to save gas there are some ways you can conserve fuel.
For example, you can try fuel additives and gas saving spark plugs. Getting your car tuned up every few months can help, as can keeping the tires inflated yet not overinflated. Even if your MPG ratings aren't the best small steps can make substantial differences. Try biking or walking instead of driving when possible, carpool if you can and when you do drive, keep your speed steady and under 55 mph. There are plenty more gas saving tips online, especially at the EPA government site.
